"Light My Fire" lyrics

"Light My Fire"

You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you
Girl, we couldn't get much higher

Come on, baby, light my fire
Come on, baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire

The time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try, now we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre

Come on, baby, light my fire
Come on, baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire
Yeah

The time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try, now we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre

Come on, baby, light my fire
Come on, baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire
Yeah!

You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you
Girl, we couldn't get much higher

Come on, baby, light my fire
Come on, baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire
Try to set the night on fire
Try to set the night on fire
Try to set the night on fire

Writer(s): Jim Morrison, John Paul Densmore, Raymond Manzarek, Robert Krieger
This song began with a conversation between Robby Krieger and Jim Morrison when Krieger asked Morrison, what he should write about. Jim answered, "Something universal, which won't disappear two years from now." Krieger decided to write about one of the elements among air, earth, fire, water. He chose fire because he liked the song "Play With Fire" by The Rolling Stones.
This song helped the band become very popular, because before they had been known only as an underground band from Los Angeles.
The album version of this song was too long for the airplay having more than seven minutes, and it was edited to run 2:52 for the single. That version reached the top on Billboard Hot 100 and made the band's first big hit, though many fans disliked the shorter version, and radio DJs still played the album version.
This song was the first number-one hit for the recording company of the band, Elektra.
The stereo LP release of this had a speed discrepancy being 3.5% slower than it should be. The original 45 RPM single, though, was produced at the correct speed. The speed was corrected only on the 40th Anniversary mix of the debut album in 2006.
José Feliciano made a very successful cover of this song in 1968.
The Rolling Stone magazine put this song on the 35th position on its list "500 Greatest Songs of All Time". The song also belongs to the "Songs of the Century" list.
