"Alive" lyrics

"Alive"

"Son," she said, "have I got a little story for you
What you thought was your daddy was nothing but a
While you were sitting home alone at age thirteen
Your real daddy was dying
Sorry you didn't see him, but I'm glad we talked"

Oh, I, oh I'm still alive
Hey, I, oh I'm still alive
Hey, I, oh I'm still alive
Hey, oh

While she walks slowly across a young man's room
She said, "I'm ready for you"
Why I can't remember anything to this very day
'Cept the look, the look
Oh, you know where, now I can't see I just stare

I, I'm still alive
Hey, I, oh, I'm still alive
Hey, I, oh, I'm still alive
Hey, I, oh, I'm still alive, yeah
Ooh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, oh, ooh

"Is something wrong", she said, of course there is
"You're still alive," she said, oh, and do I deserve to be?
Is that the question?
And if so, if so who answers?
Who answers?

I, oh I'm still alive
Hey, I, oh I'm still alive
Yeah, I, oh I'm still alive
Yeah, I
Ooh, I'm still alive!
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah!

Ooh yeah, ooh ooh
Ooh yeah, yeah yeah yeah

"Alive" is the debut single from the band's debut album "Ten". The song was released on July 7, 1991.
Originally, the instrumental version written by guitarist Stone Gossard, was included on the demo tape circulated in the hopes of finding a singer. The tape made its way into the hands of vocalist Eddie Vedder, who wrote the lyrics and added his vocals to the song. Pearl Jam liked what they heard and made him lead singer.
The part of the lyrics where a young man discovers that the man he thought was his father is actually his stepfather is autobiographical. When Vedder was a teenager, mother revealed this to him.
Regarding the "I'm still alive" chorus, Eddie had quite a different meaning in mind: "A teenager is being made aware of a shocking truth that leaves him plenty confused. It was a curse - I'm still alive." However, the fans interpreted these words as an inspirational thing, an affirmation of life. "They lifted the curse. The audience changed the meaning for me," says Vedder.
The song is the first piece in "Mamasan" trilogy. The other two parts are "Once", in which the character descends into madness and goes on a killing spree, and "Footsteps", in which he eventually looking back from a prison cell awaiting his execution.
