John Lennon wrote this song to amuse Prudence Farrow, a sister of actress Mia Farrow, who was with The Beatles in Rishikesh studying Transcendental Meditation. They thought she was depressed sometimes dedicating too much time to deep meditation, though she just tried to take the learning process seriously. She said in an interview for Mojo magazine in 2008, "They were trying to be cheerful, but I wished they'd go away. I don't think they realized what the training was all about."

The guitar playing technique used by John Lennon on this song was learn from Donovan, who studied meditation with The Beatles in India.

Drums are played by Paul McCartney on this song, because Ringo Starr temporarily left the band after some in-band disagreements.
