This song was released as a promotional single for his album 'x' on the 16th of May 2014. It was the first song Ed Sheeran wrote for his second studio album.

An acoustic version of this track was initially released on his YouTube channel with a music video on the 2nd of May 2014. The black-and-white video was filmed in an empty Wembley Arena in London, England.

Ed Sheeran wrote this for Alice, his former girlfriend. They dated when they were teenagers. Many of the romantic tracks on his album "+" were written about her. "One" is the last song he wrote about this subject.

This song was written by Ed Sheeran while he was on tour in Perth, Australia, in November 2011. He composed it in his dressing room on a guitar made of a whiskey barrel.

"One" was certified Gold in the United Kingdom on the 7th of April 2014 for sales of at least 400,000 units.
