Foy Vance is one of the co-authors of this track. He is a musician, singer and songwriter from Ireland. He was a support act to Ed Sheeran during tours.

"Tenerife Sea" was inspired by the after-party followed the 2013 Grammy Awards, wherein Ed Sheeran's single "The A Team" was nominated for Song of the Year but lost the award to the "We Are Young" by the band Fun.. Sheeran said later to The San Francisco Examiner, "It was a very odd atmosphere, where everyone was out for themselves. And I found myself being competitive, as well, and pissed off that I didn't win, which felt very unhealthy."

The title of this song was chosen so because the eyes of Ed Sheeran's girlfriend were as blue as the seas in Tenerife, Canary Islands of Spain.
