"the man himself" lyrics
"the man himself"
The days, the weeks
And the years rolled on by all the unending pavement
And beauty in the architecture of a two-bed that I can scarcely see
You see? There was angels in the ornaments in underneath you
And they're hummin' away, hummin' away 'til I get what I need
Hey, now
I dunno what to feel, I dunno how to feel right
But I want to become my own man, I guess
Hey, now
I dunno if I'll ever feel right
And let everything change to things that can make a man grow tall
There's a painting of you and it hangs in our kitchen now
'Cause when my kid's getting high in a hot-wired symphony
Mm, and I'm looking for sage advice
You'll be hummin' away, hummin' away like everything's fine
Hey, now
I dunno what to feel, I dunno how to feel right
But I want to become my own man, I guess
Hey, now
I dunno if I'll ever feel right
And let everything change to things that can make a man grow tall
So take a single step at a simple pace
And the outward momentum will maybe unfuck you in time
So comb your hair and clean your teeth
And dial back home at least once or twice a week
And be sure that you'll see them a lot more than I did with mine
But if they're out of the way, out of the way, then everything's fine
I dunno what to feel, I dunno how to feel right
But I want to become my own man, I guess
Hey, now
I dunno if I'll ever feel right
And let everything change to things that can make a man grow tall
I'm out of the way, out of the way and everything
Out of the way, out of the way and everything
Out of the way, hummin' away, hummin' away, hummin' away
Hummin' away, out of the way and everything
Out of the way, out of the way and everything
Out of the way, out of the way and everything
Out of the way, out of the way and everything's fine

Gang Of Youths wrote about "The Man Himself" in the description of its visualizer, "We love this track. Listen out for 'Imenetuki Mangaia' at the song's core, recorded by the wonderful David Fanshawe on the island of Mangaia a lifetime ago. The magnificent indigenous performers are the stars of the song. We can't thank them enough."
Frontman Dave Le'aupepe was partly inspired to write this song by grief following the death of his father. "If I ever have kids I'm not really sure how to raise them without my dad helping me out," he said of the song in a statement.
