Bob Dylan wrote this song for the soundtrack to the film "Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid" (1973).

Todd Crew, a friend of the band and Jetboy member, heard Guns N' Roses rehearsing Bob Dylan's song and advised to use it in their repertoire since it fitted their image. They played it once live and it did well. When Crew overdosed on heroin soon after that, the band added this song to their set list in memory of him.

A live version of the song was released on the maxi-single of "Welcome to the Jungle" (1987). A studio version was recorded for the soundtrack of the film "Days of Thunder" (1990) and, with slight changes, for the album "Use Your Illusion II" (1991).
