This song is the opening track of the album. It is about the Viking invasions.

The lyrics of this song were influenced by the band's visit to Iceland where they performed on a concert in Reykjavík. Robert Plant said, "We did come from the land of the ice and snow... The university prepared a concert hall for us and it was phenomenal. The response from the kids was remarkable and we had a great time. 'Immigrant Song' was about that trip..."

The line "the hammer of the gods" from this song's lyrics gave the name to the book "Hammer of the Gods: The Led Zeppelin Saga" by author Stephen Davis.

Jack Black (Tenacious D) begged for permission from the band to use this song in the film "School Of Rock" where he played the main character. He said on the DVD, "It may seem corny, but it worked. The moral of the story is don't be too proud to beg."

This song is prominently featured in the film "Thor: Ragnarok" (2017).
