"Whole Lotta Love" lyrics

"Whole Lotta Love"

You need cooling, baby, I'm not fooling
I'm gonna send you back to schooling
Way down inside, honey, you need it
I'm gonna give you my love
I'm gonna give you my love

Want a whole lotta love
Want a whole lotta love
Want a whole lotta love
Want a whole lotta love

You've been learning, baby, I've been yearning
All them good times, baby, baby, I've been learning
Way, way down inside, honey, you need it
I'm gonna give you my love
I'm gonna give you my love

Want a whole lotta love
Want a whole lotta love
Want a whole lotta love
Want a whole lotta love

You've been cooling, baby, I've been drooling
All the good times baby I've been misusing
Way, way down inside, I'm gonna give you my love
I'm gonna give you every inch of my love
Gonna give you my love

Yeah! All right! Let's go

Want a whole lotta love
Want a whole lotta love
Want a whole lotta love
Want a whole lotta love

Way down inside... woman... you need... love

Shake for me, girl
I wanna be your backdoor man
Keep it cooling, baby
Keep it cooling, baby
Keep it cooling, baby
Keep it cooling, baby

This song is the opening track on the album. When is was released as a single in the USA it became the band's first hit single and was eventually certified Gold.
The lyrics for this song were borrowed by Robert Plant from the song "You Need Loving" by Small Faces, which, in turn, was a cover of Muddy Waters' song "You Need Love". The lyrics were originally written by Willie Dixon. The Small Faces were never sued by Dixon, but Led Zeppelin was in 1985. Plant confessed the fact and said, "...well, you only get caught when you're successful. That's the game."
The distinct drum sound of this song was recorded in the big room at Olympic Studios in London, which had 28-foot ceilings. The drum kit was on a platform and microphones were put and hung in different places at different heights.
The freeform section in the middle of this song was produced by Jimmy Page and engineer Eddie Kramer by "twiddling every knob known to man" on a console.
There is a shorter version of this song lasting 3:10 (instead of the album's version 5:33) released by Atlantic Records for the promotion on radio stations. It doesn't have the freeform section in the middle and fades out earlier. This version wasn't intended for commercial release, but some copies were sold in the USA anyway, and they are collectors items now.
