This is the first single from their fourth studio album.

Linkin Park organized a contest in July 2010 for fans who could download stems from the song and remix them or write their own part for the song. The winning remix was included as an additional track on the album.

The song's theme is war. It was featured in the trailer for the video game "Medal of Honour" made by Electronic Arts. Bassist David "Phoenix" Farrell told USA Today, "When we were talking with EA and being familiar with the 'Medal of Honor' title I think the song made a lot of sense. The song itself has got some dark undertones and it's got a lot of energy in it. It kind of just fits with the subject matter."

The line "Living under loaded gun" refers to the nuclear arsenal. The title of the album is a reference to J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, who said, "If the radiance of a thousand suns were to burst at once into the sky, that would be like the splendor of the mighty one."

Mike Shinoda explained the concept of the song's music video to MTV News, "If you could imagine when nuclear fission was invented, or a moment in time when something can be used for positive or negative. Something can be beautiful or it can be destructive."

The song was featured in the video game "Linkin Park Revenge" for iOS.
