Chester Bennington explained at a press conference in San Jose on the 22nd of February 2011, that he wrote this song for his children, saying that they were growing up and things may get tough, but that he would always love them.
The creation of this song was explained by Children Bennington who said, "The second I heard the chord progression, the melody came and then the words came. It literally dawned on me like a flood, which is very rare. Usually, songs come in pieces, but this song came right away!"
Being the last song on the album, which describes war and destruction, this song encourages the listener to never repeat those horrible events, to not give up and fix what we already have done.
Children Bennington, who had four sons, said about fatherhood, "When I was younger, I liked songs that got people wanting to punch others in the face. Now, I don't want to scream at people. I want to talk to people. I feel much more able to speak about how I view things in the world."
