Lin-Manuel Miranda was inspired by chapter 59 of the novel "The Name of the Wind" by Patrick Rothfuss. He wrote on Twitter, "The Story Of Tonight is me trying to capture the feel of Kvothe & his friends leaving the Eaolian, @PatrickRothfuss."

"Something they can never take away" is a reference to John Locke's idea about freedom that cannot be stripped away from a human being.

"Raise a glass to the four of us" is inaccurate from the historical point of view because Alexander Hamilton met only Mulligan by that time. He would be meeting Lafayette and Laurens a couple of years later. But in the musical, they already met in "Aaron Burr, Sir", two track earlier.
