"maggots for brains" lyrics

"maggots for brains"

My day was so mundane, I don't think I left the house
Drank a pot of coffee, tried to write, nothing came out
Somehow, it's the weekend, I'm still bored out of my skull
And I went to a party but only on principle

Empty, look at me

I'm a zombie in my body, I'm a train off of the track
I feel dirty, I feel rotten, and the colors are all flat
I'm a sad shell of a woman and I've got maggots for brains
But that's just a thing that happens when my
When my baby goes away
When my baby goes away
He goes away

Everything feels moldy like the fruit that's in my fridge
And everything that's funny, I wish I could tell to him
And sometimes, at a low point, I even wish for tragedy
'Cause I know he'd come over and take real good care of me

It's so weird, he's not here

I'm a zombie in my body, I'm a train off of the track
I feel dirty, I feel rotten, and the colors are all flat
I'm a sad shell of a woman and I've got maggots for brains
But that's just a thing that happens when my
When my baby goes away
When my baby goes away
He goes away, oh

What can I do
But think of you?
But think of you? (But think of you?)
What can I do
But think of you? (All I can do)
But think of you? (But think of)

I'm a zombie in my body, I'm a train off of the track
I feel dirty, I feel rotten, and the colors are all flat
I'm a sad shell of a woman and I've got maggots for brains
But that's just a thing that happens when my
When my baby goes away

What can I do (When my baby goes away)
But think of you?
But think of you? (Away, when my baby goes away)
What can I do (When my baby goes away)
But think of you?
But think of you? (Away)

Olivia Rodrigo teased this song with a lyric "I'm a zombie in my body" on a T-shirt she wore during her performance at Lollapalooza in Chicago on the 1st of August 1, 2025.
Olivia Rodrigo told BBC the following about "Maggots For Brains" during her interview 10 days prior to the album release, "I love that song musically, and there's a lot going on - a lot of harmonies - and literally in the car, I was like 'Turn that backing vocal up just one decibel.' I was getting kind of weird about it. Nobody else will notice."
This song was inspired by the characters Miranda Hobbes for "Sex and The City" which Olivia Rodrigo is a fan of. She revealed during her appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on the 1st of May, 2026, "It's my favourite show. I love 'Sex and the City'. I think I've watched every episode three times." Olivia explained further, "When Miranda and Steve are getting back together, she's crying and she's like, 'Steve, anytime something funny happens, I just want to tell you'. I remember watching that and being like 'Oh my God. I have to write a song about it.'"
Speaking with Popcast, Olivia Rodrigo said of "Maggots For Brains" that it was her favorite song on the album, "I really love it. I think that when we made that one, sonically, I was like 'Oh, yeah, this feels right and this feels like the point in time that I'm at'. I kind of knew, and Dan, who I made the record with." Dan Nigro produced the song.
