"The Ballad Of Mona Lisa" is the first single off of the album and also the first song written after Ryan Ross and Jon Walker left the band. It was published on the 1st of February 2011 by the remaining members: Brendon Urie and Spencer Smith.

Brendon Urie explained to OK! Magazine, "The song is about a battle in yourself … an inner struggle in oneself. The duality in nature, where you see yourself as a bad person, and the good person trying to correct your bad habits."

The music video for this track is connected with two other songs of the band's catalogue: the top hat comes from the clip for "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" and the clock on the wall showing 9:00 is a reference to the song "Nine In The Afternoon".
