The third single from the album, this song tells about how it is difficult to maintain a strong relationship with someone and trust them.

The introduction of "It's A Hard Life" is based on an aria "Vesti la giubba" from the opera "Pagliacci" by Italian composer Ruggero Leoncavallo.

The piano parts on this track sound in some places quite similar to the classic first section from "Bohemian Rhapsody".

Brian May said on the "Greatest Hits 2"-DVD commentary, "To my mind this is one of the most beautiful songs that Freddie ever wrote. It's straight from the heart, and he really opened up during the creation of it, I sat with him for hours and hours and hours just trying pull it away and get the most out of it. It's one of his loveliest songs."

Roger Taylor said on Queen's "Greatest Video Hits 2" collection, that this was one of his favorite songs written by Freddie Mercury, but he absolutely hated the music video.

The costumes the band wore during the filming of the music video were very uncomfortable especially the Freddie Mercury's one with "eyes" which made him look "like a giant prawn" according to the other band members.
