It is said that Li Tieguai was once blessed with striking good looks, but any worthwhile trip requires leaving a few things behind. As a newly minted Immortal, Li set upon his inaugural journey to the heavenly realm to meet the rest of the crew, which required a bit of astral projection - so while his spirit packed a bag and flew on up, his earthly body had to stay home. He wound up lingering a bit longer on high than anticipated, and after seven days, the apprentice charged with keeping watch assumed Li had decided to move up the clouds full-time and so... he cremated the body. Seems a bit hasty, doesn't it? Well, Li's soul did come back, just a few hours later. Finding himself inconveniently bodiless, he was forced to pop into a nearby corpse, which was, as attested in numerous ancient documents, much less attractive.
