Bob Heatlie wrote "Merry Christmas Everyone" for Shakin' Stevens. Heatlie said, "I played everything on the demo – sax, drums, the lot – in the garage." Stevens said later, "I listened to it and I could picture snow."

Shakin' Stevens recalled in The Observer Music Monthly on the 18th of December 2005, "I'm very, very proud to be associated with a #1 classic Christmas song, up there with your Bings and your Lennons and Slades. It's very difficult to get a Christmas #1 with traditional lyrics."

The music video for "Merry Christmas Everyone" was filmed in Lapland. Shakin' Stevens performs the song in Santaworld in Sweden.
