"Wait And Bleed" lyrics

"Wait And Bleed"

I've felt the hate rise up in me
Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves
I wander out where you can't see
Inside my shell, I wait and bleed

I've felt the hate rise up in me
Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves
I wander out where you can't see
Inside my shell, I wait and bleed

Goodbye!

I wipe it off on a tile
The light is brighter this time
Everything is 3D blasphemy
My eyes are red and gold
The hair is standing straight up
This is not the way I pictured me
I can't control my shakes
How the hell did I get here?
Something about this, so very wrong
I have to laugh out loud
I wish I didn't like this
Is it a dream or a memory?

I've felt the hate rise up in me
Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves
I wander out where you can't see
Inside my shell, I wait and bleed

Get outta my head 'cause I don't need this
Why didn't I see this?
Well, I'm a victim - Manchurian candidate
I have sinned by just making my mind up
And taking your breath away

I've felt the hate rise up in me
Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves
I wander out where you can't see
Inside my shell, I wait and bleed

I've felt the hate rise up in me
Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves
I wander out where you can't see
Inside my shell, I wait and bleed

Goodbye!

You haven't learned a thing
I haven't changed a thing
My flesh was in my bones
The pain was always free

You haven't learned a thing
I haven't changed a thing
My flesh was in my bones
The pain was always free

I've felt the hate rise up in me
Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves
I wander out where you can't see
Inside my shell, I wait and bleed

I've felt the hate rise up in me
Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves
I wander out where you can't see
Inside my shell, I wait and bleed

And it waits for you!

"Wait and Bleed" was released on July 28th, 1999 as the lead single from Slipknot's self-titled album. "Wait and Bleed" earned Slipknot their first Grammy Award nomination at the 43rd Grammy Awards in 2001, but ended up losing to Deftones' "Elite". Slipknot would win their first Grammy in 2006 with their song "Before I Forget".
In an interview with Songfacts, percussionist Chris Fehn commented: "It was just a basic song. We didn't know it was going to be that popular. The funny thing is the record label, especially new guys at the record label, were coming around when we started getting big, and they're like, 'Oh, the next record you can write like three Wait And Bleeds.' And we're just like, 'You are an idiot. Therefore, we don't do that.'"
In an interview with Kerrang! magazine, drummer Joey Jordison stated: "I wrote the music for 'Wait and Bleed' on my own... I showed it to the guys at rehearsal, and then Corey [Taylor] wrote some lyrics really fast in our practice space... He took us to a new level immediately."
About the meaning of the lyrics, frontman Corey Taylor has said: "The song's about that switch in your head that can go at any moment. You go from being a civilized human being to someone who can commit terrible acts. I've always been fascinated by the fact we represent ourselves as civilized when, at any moment, we can become animals."
