This song was inspired by Stevie Wonder's wife Syreeta Wright. Though this couple had divorced before the song became a hit, the song still remains as an expression of love and devotion.
Scott Edwards, bass player of Stevie Wonder's band, told songfacts.com about the recording of this track with Wonder, "He had been working with the structure by himself. But once he had all of us together, he just started playing it. And then we all joined in and we all could feel that the vibe and the way the tune was going, it was a hit."
This single was at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for a week in May of 1973 becoming Stevie Wonder's third number-one single on the chart.
This song won the 1973 Grammy Award for "Best Male Pop Vocal Performance".
Jack White performed an alternative rock version of this song with The Muppets for the series finale of The Muppets in 2016.
