"Friendly Fire" lyrics

"Friendly Fire"

I'm more than a guitarist
And a singer
For some I'm a provider
And a care giver
I'm a gardener
And a cat sitter
And I'm a dreamer
And I'm a fisherman
I'm a walker
And I'm a swimmer
And I try my best to be a good lover
And I try my best to be a good brother
And I do my best to keep in touch with my mother

Every night I play
I sing a song for her
And I try my best to keep in touch with my father
Everywhere I go
I send him a postcard
Or a letter

And I worry [?] about both of their health
My dad can't walk
My mom's got [?]
Arthritis that causes her to be off balance
It makes us worry because
It causes her blindness
Despite all this
She shows her grandchildren
Nothing but kindness

May be a strange thing
To hear me say
But they'd rather not hear from me
Every single day
My dad loves [?]
And not being bothered
My mom loves getting rest
And a phone call can startle her
And at their age
I don't question their need for boundaries
Or their need for space
I'm respectful of their wishes
And I'm mindful of their age
I'm inspired by them
And their courageousness
And their willpower
Their tough-spiritedness

My dad outlived
All of his eight siblings
My mom lost her father
Before she turned one
At 86 and 89
They've lost countless friends
And they've lived through things
That I could not comprehend

My mom lived in New Orleans
During segregation
Oh man what a perspective she has
Signs on buses:
Whites only and coloreds only
Drinking fountains for whites
Drinking fountains for blacks

My parents were born in the 1930s
And on the radio they heard reports on World War II
My dad lost his big brother Lenny in pearl harbor
At 23 years old he was shot down by friendly fire
He was a radioman gunner on a two man aircraft carrier enterprise
His last words were "don't shoot! don't shoot! we're Americans!"
Before he went to war he was torn between
Becoming a pro boxer and a pro golfer
I've only seen the boxing articles
And their various spellings
Of the last name Kozelek

Mom and Dad I love you
I'm gonna be home soon
And dad I'm gonna watch through your favorite black and white
Movies with you
Starring Natalie Wood and James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart
Steve McQueen and John Garfield and Jimmy Stewart

Mom and Dad I love you (Mom and dad I love you)
I'm gonna be home soon
And mom I'm gonna play a game of scrabble with you
In your living room
And admire your Roseville pottery
And take a walk down the path to the
Little turtle pond and remember fishing there
When I was young

Oh I wouldn't trade my name
Or my Ohio upbringing
I wouldn't trade my family name Kozelek
For anything

Oh I wouldn't trade my name
Or my Ohio upbringing
I wouldn't trade my family name Kozelek
For anything

Oh I wouldn't trade my name (Oh I wouldn't trade my name)
Or my Ohio upbringing (Or my Ohio upbringing)
I wouldn't trade my family name Kozelek
For anything

Oh I wouldn't trade my name (Oh I wouldn't trade my name)
Or my Ohio upbringing (Or my Ohio upbringing)
I wouldn't trade my family name Kozelek
For anything

Oh I wouldn't trade my name (Oh I wouldn't trade my name)
Or my Ohio upbringing (Or my Ohio upbringing)
I wouldn't trade my family name Kozelek
For anything

Oh I wouldn't trade my name (Oh I wouldn't trade my name)
Or my Ohio upbringing (Or my Ohio upbringing)
I wouldn't trade my family name Kozelek
For anything

Oh I wouldn't trade my name (Oh I wouldn't trade my name)
Or my Ohio upbringing (Or my Ohio upbringing)
I wouldn't trade my family name Kozelek
For anything
