"Writers Write" lyrics

"Writers Write"

Mid-December in LA, so nice to be home
I was gone so long, playing shows
And recording in the mountains
With my Hungarian amigos
The music's still playing in my head
Their voices still speak to me
On my walks and in my dreams
On my walks and in my dreams
A few weeks in the mountains, surrounded by nothing
But keyboards and drum kits, guitar amps and bass riffs
And music and music and music
There's no bond like that
Making music with friends up in the mountains

And now I'm shifting gears
Walking the chilly streets of LA, of my LA amigo Dave
He plays piano beautifully
His arrangements remind me of 1980s TV show themed songs
I watch those shows with my mom
I watch them with my dad
Hill Street Blues
I walk around with that picture in my head
My mother and I watching Hill Street Blues

And at the end of the day I go home to Caroline
And my kitty cat Violet and Clover and Figgy
And write into the night until the sun comes up
I write like a madman, but I ain't no madman
I'm a content man with Christmas on my mind
No different than any Christmas time
My references to Christmas speak for themselves
This Christmas next to my bed
A juggle through my hopes
The Hamlet by William Faulkner
East of Eden by John Steinbeck
Night and Day by John Connolly
Nobody ever called them madmen
I write a fraction of what they do
So my themes are the same

Steinbeck, never straight away from the theme of California
Except one time
A book about Norway, The Moon Is Down
William Faulkner never straight away from the theme of Mississippi
Eexcept one time
A book about New Orleans, Mosquitoes
John Connolly don't straight away from the theme of Charlie Parker
Oh yeah, but he done
No Charlie Parker in this one
About Stan Laurel
Hee hee hee hee

I write about [?]
I write about New Orleans
I write about Budapest, Tonderay
I write about Moscow and Tel Aviv
I write about Ohio
I write about what's on my bookshelf
I write about anything that rhymes with shelf
Santa's out on the top day of Christmas
My true love gave to me
A plate of warm healthy Christmas turkey
Mashed potatoes and stuffing
We mix it up with the sound of Japanese kelp

Writers write through hot summer nights
Through rainy spring days
Through the autumn colored autumn
Through the winter, writers write
About Christmas candlelight
The warm glow of Christmas, a caroline beside me
Violet purring, inspire me to write
Until morning, about Christmas candlelight
