Tate McRae explained Apple Music the background story of "What's Your problem?", "I wrote 'Hate Myself', and then a couple months later, I came to the realisation where I was like, 'Oh, so this is why I was blaming myself—because he made me hate myself!' So when I was writing this song, I put in the line 'You made me hate myself just so that I can love you more.' It was really cool to just talk about the perspective of a manipulator and how that can really mess you up mentally."
