The first single for Tom Petty, this song was first released in January 1977, but it didn't chart. Only after months of touring, it was re-released in October 1977 and reached number 40 in the USA.

The first time this track was recorded, it was 7-minutes long and had an extended guitar solo at the end, but the final version is just 2:43.

Tom Petty wrote a third verse of the song specifically for Jamaican singer Grace Jones, who recorded a reggae cover of the song on her 1980 album "Warm Leatherette". It was released as a US-only single in July 1980.

Tom Petty sometimes incorporated "Breakdown" with Ray Charles's "Hit the Road Jack" during live performances. A live recording of this variation appears on "The Live Anthology" (2009) album.
