This song was written for "Elvis", a US television comeback special featuring Elvis Presley, that broadcast on the NBC television network on the 3rd of December 1968.

Mac Davis, one of the co-authors, told Billboard magazine, "They had asked for a song about looking back over the years, and, oddly enough, I had to write it in one night. I stayed up all night at Billy Strange's house in Los Angeles. He had a little office set up in his garage. I wrote it right there." Billy Strange was another co-writer.

This track was a B-side to "Charro", the song from the movie "Charro!" (1969) starring Elvis Presley.
