"Heart Pine (The Ballad Of Mr. Bill)" lyrics

Feather-white head of hair
Talkin' like he's outta air
Could see the stories his eyes told
Pushin' 90, still pullin' rows
He pulled up on my new farm
Windows down, hangin' out his arm
Said, "I grew up in that ol' house
Looks like you got it 'bout tore down to the heart pine."

They don't make 'em like that no more
From the ceiling to the floor
When a 2x4 was really a 2x4
Hand cut from hard times
Lookin' from here, it don't look like much
But lookin' from there, it damn sure was
Daddy prayin' for rain
Momma prayin' for us
On that front porch made of heart pine

"Don't get me wrong, hell, if I was you
I'd tear that old thing down too
It's been way too empty, way too long
'Bout time somebody came along
Brought this old ground back to new
Let it live like it used to
But before you do, would you mind
If I loaded up a little bit of your heart pine?"

They don't make 'em like that no more
From the ceiling to the floor
When a 2x4 was really a 2x4
Hand cut from hard times
Lookin' from here, it don't look like much
But lookin' from there, it damn sure was
Daddy prayin' for rain
Momma prayin' for us
On that front porch made of heart pine

Now there's a new house standin' where the old one did
We're plantin' our roots and raisin' our kids
Bow our heads and say grace at supper time
'Round a table made of that heart pine

They don't make 'em like that no more
From the ceiling to the floor
When a 2x4 was really a 2x4
Hand cut from hard times
Lookin' from here, it don't look like much
But lookin' from there, it damn sure was
Daddy prayin' for rain
Momma prayin' for us
On that front porch made of love
And that heart pine
Yeah, that heart pine

Hey, Mr. Bill. It's nice to meet you
Come on by any time
Sarah makes a good apple pie now
