This song evolved from another song written by Kirk Hammett when he was a member of Exodus. It had the title "Die by His Hand" then, but it was never released and remained a demo. The lyrics and the riffs were changed for Metallica's song.

This song was inspired by the film "The Ten Commandments" (1956) about The Bible's tale of Plague of the Death of the Firstborn (Exodus 12:29) where the Angel of Death is shown as a green cloud. Cliff Burton thought it looked like creeping death.

"Creeping Death" was the only commercial single from the band's second album.
