This song was the first ballad released by Metallica. They had some rough times in 1984 particularly because their equipment were stolen. James Hetfield explained that he and Lars Ulrich were obsessed with death at the time.

"Fade to Black" was performed by the band on Guns N' Roses/Metallica Stadium Tour on the 8th of August 1992 when James Hetfield was accidentally burned by pyrotechnics and suffered multiple injuries on his left side.
