This song, through Mark's mom voicemail, reveals that he has recently broken up with his girlfriend, Maureen.

Mark'm mother calls his former girlfriend a lesbian, although later in the musical—in the song "Take Me or Leave Me"—Maureen says, "...everyone stares at me: boys, girls" which could imply that she was actually bisexual.
