"Ask Me Why" lyrics

"Ask Me Why"

I love you, 'cause you tell me things I want to know
And it's true that it really only goes to show
That I know that I, I, I, I
Should never, never, never be blue

Now you're mine, my happiness still makes me cry
And in time, you'll understand the reason why
If I cry, it's not because I'm sad
But you're the only love that I've ever had

I can't believe it's happened to me
I can't conceive of any more misery

Ask me why, I'll say I love you
And I'm always thinking of you

I love you, 'cause you tell me things I want to know
And it's true that it really only goes to show
That I know that I, I, I, I
Should never, never, never be blue

Ask me why, I'll say I love you
And I'm always thinking of you

I can't believe it's happened to me
I can't conceive of any more misery

Ask me why, I'll say I love you
And I'm always thinking of you
You, you

Writer(s): Paul James McCartney, John Winston Lennon
This song was influenced by songs of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles: "You Really Got A Hold On Me" and "What's So Good About Goodbye".
In the book "Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now" McCartney stated, "It was John's original idea and we both sat down and wrote it together, just did a job on it. It was mostly John's."
"Ask Me Why" was performed by the band still with Pete Best on drums when they had an audition for Parlophone Records in their early days. It was also recorded at Abbey Road studios on the 6th of June 1962 with Pete Best, but that take was lost, so, it was re-recorded again on the 26th of November 1962 already with Ringo Starr on drums.
This song was released as the B-side to "Please Please Me": The Beatles first US single.
A version of this song was recorded for the BBC on the 3rd of September 1963 and released on "On Air – Live at the BBC Volume 2" (2013).
