This song is the title track off of The Beatles' debut album.
The band's producer George Martin told in an interview for Music Week magazine that he wasn't impressed when the Beatles played this song to him for the first time. He said, "Do you know that's too bloody boring for words? It's a dirge. At twice the speed it might sound reasonable." He thought to make a joke, but the band returned with a sped-up version, and the song turned out to be their first big hit.
This song was the first band's single in the USA. The small Chicago-based Vee Jay label released "Please Please Me" when the major labels Capitol Records and Atlantic turned it down.
The first US release of this song was on the 7th of February 1963. That release had the band's name written as "The Beattles", and it got popular mostly in Chicago, the home city of the issuing Vee Jay label. When The Beatles became more famous in the USA a year later, Vee Jay re-issued "Please Please Me" on the 3rd of January 1964. That second release was a huge hit reaching number-three position in Billboard Hot 100 chart, accompanied by four other The Beatles' songs which held all five top places.
An early version of this song had session drummer Andy White on drums instead of Ringo Starr and didn't feature a harmonica. That version was included on "Anthology 1" (1995).
