The original title of the song was "Seventeen". Paul McCartney recalled, "I had 'She was just seventeen,' and then 'never been a beauty queen'. When I showed it to John, he screamed with laughter, and said 'You're joking about that line, aren't you?'" Lennon changed the second line to "You know what I mean", and McCartney said taler, "Which was good, because you don't know what I mean."

Count-in "One, two, three, four!" by Paul McCartney at the beginning of the song wasn't edited out because the record producer George Martin wanted the album to sound as a live performance. He saw the band perform at the Cavern Club and he suggested, "Let's record every song you've got, come down to the studios and we'll just whistle through them in a day."

John Lennon performed this song once at a concert of his good friend Elton John at Madison Square Garden on the 28th of November 1974. This version was released as the B-side of Elton's "Philadelphia Freedom" in 1975. This was the only live duet ever recorded between them.

The characters of Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman sing this song in the film "Rain Man" (1988).
