Paul McCartney wrote this song about his girlfriend Iris Caldwell. He was 16, and John Lennon was 17, and they used to write songs while skipping school. In their opinion this song was the first one good enough to record it.

The Beatles' debut single. Ringo Starr told about the song's importance, "For me that was more important than anything else. That first piece of plastic. You can't believe how great that was. It was so wonderful. We were on a record!"

The band met their future producer George Martin when they auditioned with this song at Parlophone Records. Martin later played a great role in their career helping them find their sound.

There were three versions of this song recorded with three different drummers:

1962 June 6 with Pete Best. This was included on "Anthology 1" (1995);
1962 September 4 with Ringo Starr. This was released by Parlophone as a single (issued with a red label) and is available on "Past Masters" (1988);
1962 September 11 with Andy White. This is the version heard on the "Please Please Me" LP (1963).
