"Help!" lyrics

"Help!"
("Help!" Version)

Help! I need somebody
Help! Not just anybody
Help! You know I need someone
Help!

(When) When I was younger (When I was young) so much younger than today
(I never need) I never needed anybody's help in any way
(Now) But now these days are gone (These days are gone) and I'm not so self assured
(And now I find) Now I find I've changed my mind, I've opened up the doors

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me?

(Now) And now my life has changed (My life has changed) in oh so many ways
(My independence) My independence seems to vanish in the haze
(But) But ev'ry now (Every now and then) and then I feel so insecure
(I know that I) I know that I just need you like I've never done before

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me?

When I was younger, so much younger than today
I never needed anybody's help in any way
(Now) But now these days are gone (These days are gone) and I'm not so self assured
(And now I find) Now I find I've changed my mind, I've opened up the doors

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me?

Help me, help me
Ooh

This song is the title track both to the album and to the eponymous film, the second of the band's films.
The lyrics of this song represent John Lennon's stress because of the quick rise to fame. In 1980 he told Playboy, "I was fat and depressed and I was crying out for help.".
John Lennon wrote this song as a slow one, but the tempo was changed during production for the sake of being commercially friendly.
The original idea for the album cover was to portray the members of the band with small flags used by ships to communicate. They should've spelled the word "help". But the photographer Robert Freeman just wanted them to look good, so he changed their poses in a way that flags didn't spell anything.
In the film "Yellow Submarine" Young Fred knocks on the Beatles' door and says, "Won't you please, please help me?" quoting some of this song's lyrics.
Deep Purple recorded a cover version of this song for their demo in 1968. That helped them win a record deal.
"Help!" is placed at the number 29 position on the list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time according to the Rolling Stone magazine.
