The melody of this song was written by Paul McCartney when he and John Lennon were still at the college and visited French-themed parties thrown by Austin Mitchell, one of the tutors at the Liverpool College of Art. Only years later Lennon reminded McCartney that the melody was good enough to make a song of it.

The song wasn't really based on any woman, because when Paul McCartney began to write the lyrics he just asked his friend Ivan Vaughan's wife Jan, who was French, about some French words which would rhyme with "Michelle". She suggested "ma belle" and helped translate some lines.

The French line "Sont des mots qui vont très bien ensemble" is a translation of the English line "These are words that go together well".

This song won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 1967.

When Paul McCartney received the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from President Barack Obama on the 2nd of June 2010, he performed this song for Michelle Obama in the ceremony at the White House.
