Ringo Starr co-wrote this song with the usual band's authors John Lennon and Paul McCartney. It was his first songwriting credit, and he also sang lead. At a press conference for the album in 1966, Ringo made fun about his contribution saying that he wrote only "about five words" and added, "and I haven't done a thing since!"

This song was originally written by John Lennon when the band was named The Quarrymen in early days of their career. The demo of that version with Lennon and Paul McCartney was recorded in 1963, but didn't make its way to any album at that time. The new version was brought back to life again in 1965, this time with Ringo Starr vocals.
