"I'm Looking Through You" lyrics

"I'm Looking Through You"

I'm looking through you, where did you go?
I thought I knew you, what did I know?
You don't look different, but you have changed
I'm looking through you, you're not the same

Your lips are moving, I cannot hear
Your voice is soothing, but the words aren't clear
You don't sound different, I've learned the game
I'm looking through you, you're not the same

Why, tell me why, did you not treat me right?
Love has a nasty habit of disappearing overnight

You're thinking of me, the same old way
You were above me, but not today
The only difference is you're down there
I'm looking through you, and you're nowhere

Why, tell me why, did you not treat me right?
Love has a nasty habit of disappearing overnight

I'm looking through you, where did you go
I thought I knew you, what did I know
You don't look different, but you have changed
I'm looking through you, you're not the same

Yeah
Oh baby I'm changed
Ah I'm looking through you
Yeah I'm looking through you

Writer(s): Paul McCartney, John Lennon
Paul McCartney's breaking-apart relationship with an actress Jane Asher—his girlfriend at the time—inspired him to write this song about the feelings he had when she left to pursue her acting career performing on a theater tour in another town. McCartney said, "I remember specifically this one being about that, getting rid of some emotional baggage. 'I'm looking through you, and you're not there!'"
Paul McCartney accidentally dropped his tambourine during the recording of this song, and that noise can be heard at 1:20 into the song.
"I'm Looking Through You" was performed by The Muppets in the first season of their show in a special Halloween episode when semitransparent Muppet ghosts sang it as The Ghostly Trio.
The Wallflowers covered this song for the soundtrack of the film "I Am Sam" (2001).
