"Dixie Speed" lyrics

"Dixie Speed"

There's a little tin tavern that sits on the Wolfe County line
And that's where I met Martha one Sunday trading wild cherry wine
She reached back in the shed and said friend I've got just what you need
It's quick and it's cold and they call it that ole' Dixie speed

I went to workin' for Martha, that summer she showed me the ropes
She said this life's like your muffler, hangin' on to hillbilly hope
We got chased out of Spencer by a dog with a few mouths to fed
And it's a rough rowdy road when you're drivin' that ole' Dixie speed

And mama ain't home, daddy fell over
Left the baby alone, crawlin' out in the clover
We made a killin' one winter, swear it seemed like the whole town was hooked
Turned quite a few prom queens to zombies and kings into crooks
And I ain't no exception, no way man you must believe
I used to float like a boat until I revved up that ole' Dixie speed

I had a few friends who made it
Clean the train and keep it right on the tracks
I got as far as Mount Sterling till I slipped and the law drug me back
I go in on the weekends and every Monday those fools set me free
I sit out in yard with a jar of that hard Dixie speed

And mama ain't home, daddy fell over
Left the baby alone, crawlin' out in the clover

Well I burnt down this ole' cabin
And my baby is sad and blue
I said I saved a little bit
And heaven knows a little bit will do
So put me on a steamboat
And throw me in a big parade
Lay me by the water, let me drive beneath that pine-top shade
