The works of Ravi Shankar inspired George Harrison to write this song. Shankar became Harrison's sitar tutor soon after the recording.
One of the inspiration for George Harrison to write this song was his experimentation with hallucinogenic drugs.
Harrison said in a 1997 interview that the song was partly inspired by the band's desire to experiment: "We were listening to all sorts of things, Stockhausen, avant-garde music, whatever, and most of it made its way onto our records."
Anil Bhagwat, who played tabla on this song, recalled in 1988, "A chap called Angadi called me and asked if I was free that evening to work with George... he didn't say it was Harrison. It was only when a Rolls-Royce came to pick me up that I realised I'd be playing on a Beatles session." Ayana and Patricia Angadi were their common friends.
