Paul McCartney mostly wrote this song. He explained in 1966, "'Yellow Submarine' is very simple but very different. It's a fun song, a children's song." The usage of simple words, he thought, would make it easy for kids to understand and sing it.

Ringo Starr sung the lead vocal on this song. It was the band's most successful song with his lead, having taken the second place in Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1966.

One of sound effects on this song was cash register opening and bell, which was later used in Pink Floyd's song "Money".
