John Lennon's inspiration for this song were his memories of playing as a child around Salvation Army home in Liverpool called "Strawberry Field" which was, in general, an orphanage and a boys' reformatory.

During writing of this song John Lennon was in Spain where he took part in the making of the film "How I Won The War" (1967).

The Mellotron that was used at the beginning of this song belongs now to Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails.

Three versions of this song were recorded, but the released one was created by the editing two separate takes which were completely different in tempo, mood and musical key. The discarded first version was released on "Anthology 2" (1996).
