John Lennon was inspired to write this song after he had heard the song "Silhouettes" by The Rays. He explained, "I had that image of walking down the street and seeing her silhouetted in the window and not answering the phone."

John Lennon started to write this song during his holiday in Tahiti with his wife Cynthia Lennon, George Harrison and Pattie Boyd.

"No Reply" was originally written for Tommy Quickly, whose manager was also Brian Epstein, but Quickly has never released this song, so The Beatles stepped in to record it.
