"Golden Slumbers" lyrics
"Golden Slumbers"
Once, there was a way to get back homeward
Once, there was a way to get back home
Sleep, pretty darling, do not cry
And I will sing a lullaby
Golden slumbers fill your eyes
Smiles awake you when you rise
Sleep, pretty darling, do not cry
And I will sing a lullaby
Once, there was a way to get back homeward
Once, there was a way to get back home
Sleep, pretty darling, do not cry
And I will sing a lullaby

Writer(s): Paul McCartney, John Lennon
A poem "Cradle Song" by Thomas Dekker was used by Paul McCartney to write this song. McCartney composed his own music after he'd seen sheet music for the poem on a piano where his stepsister Ruth played. Other composer also have written music for that poem, e.g. W J Henderson in 1885, Peter Warlock in 1918, Charles Villiers Stanford and Alfredo Casella.
John Lennon did not perform on this song because at the time of recording he still was in a hospital recovering after a car accident in Scotland. Paul McCartney recorded it the next day after the accident. So, George Harrison played bass guitar and Paul played piano.
Paul McCartney said, "I remember trying to get a very strong vocal on it, because it was such a gentle theme, so I worked on the strength of the vocal on it, and ended up quite pleased with it."
Jennifer Hudson covered this song on the soundtrack for the animated movie "Sing" (2016).
