This song was the only one written by George Harrison that was released as an A-side single by The Beatles.
The first line was borrowed from the song "Something In The Way She Moves" by
James Taylor.
John Lennon said that "Something" was the best song on "Abbey Road", and Paul McCartney opined that it was the best song written by Harrison.
George Harrison explained in an interview, "...everybody presumed I wrote it about Pattie [his then-girlfriend], but actually, when I wrote it, I was thinking of Ray Charles." Ray Charles actually covered this song later.
The song turned out to be the most successful one for George Harrison and spawned at least 200 cover versions being the second most-covered song by The Beatles after their "Yesterday".
Frank Sinatra often performed this song in the 1970s because he thought it was the greatest love song ever written.
This song's guitar lead was one of the first leads which Dave Grohl (
Nirvana,
Foo Fighters) learned to play on guitar.
Paul McCartney performed a version of this song during his 2002 tour using a ukulele that had been given to him by George Harrison.
